According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, this issue was identified after testing was conducted by a lab in Maryland. As a result, the packing site is under investigation. While the original heavy metal reports received for the crop year showed no presence of lead and/or cause for batch testing, further investigation found that the blueberries originated in Lithuania, and aggressive monitoring of heavy metals may be deemed necessary. The packing site is currently working to enhance its food safety system by implementing mandatory batch testing for heavy metal. In the meantime, the FDA notes that the recalled product should not be consumed and instead should be discarded immediately. Refunds are available at the location of purchase, and returns will be provided at the point of sale through validation of lot codes on the affected pouches. Customers with questions may call 310-559-0259, or email salesadmin@BrandStormInc.com. To date, BrandStorm Inc. has not received any reports of adverse events related to the consumption of the recalled blueberries. “First and foremost, we remain focused on the health and welfare of our employees, customers, and partners,” the company said in a statement. “We are committed to taking the appropriate steps to ensure our network and services continue to operate seamlessly for our customers.” While the FDA pointed out that lead is a “naturally occurring element that may be contracted in fruits and vegetables during cultivation,” as well as a substance that is “present in our environment in small amounts” via inhaling dust, eating food, or drinking water, exposure to larger amounts of lead can cause dangerous lead poisoning. Even though lead can affect nearly every bodily system, its effects depend upon the amount of, and duration of lead exposure, and age of the person exposed. For example, people with high blood levels of lead may show no symptoms, but the condition may cause damage to the nervous system and internal organs. Additionally, children exposed to lead for a protracted period of time can experience permanent damage to the central nervous system. This can result in learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health issues. Acute lead poisoning may cause a wide range of symptoms, including abdominal pain, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and bloody or decreased urinary output. It is especially dangerous for children. If you have eaten Natierra Organic Freeze-Dried Blueberries and are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your health care provider immediately.
